Nature Painting & Poster Design Contest:

On the occasion of Wildlife Week- 2008
NMNH invites entries from the students of different classes
of Delhi & NCR Schools to participate in:

Category I:
Nature Painting
Contest
for Class V -
VIII
Category II:
Poster Design Contest
for Class IX - XII

Topic for the Contest : " Our Diverse Wildlife "

  • Painted entries in any colour medium designed strictly on 35 cm x 55 cm drawing paper would only be accepted.

  • The posters should have a caption not exceeding 8-10 words.
  • Each entry should bear due authentication from the school principal that the entry is the original creation of the student.
  • All entries must bear the Name of the Student, Class, Age, Category, Phone No., School & Residential Address clearly on the backside of the entry.
  • All entries will be the property of NMNH.
  • Complete entries in all respects should reach at the following address latest by 30th October, 2008.
In Each Category:
  • First Prize - Rs.5000/-
  • Second Prize - Rs.3000/-
  • Third Prize - Rs.2000/-
  • Three Encouragement Prizes worth Rs.1000/- each

Special Visits:

  1. On 14th October, 2008 five trainee teachers from Centre for Environmental Education, South Ext.-II, N.Delhi visited NMNH to know about educational programmes & activities conducted by the museum and an interactive session was held on the topic "Museum as resource for teaching environmental science". 80 students of class V from Sardar Patel Vidyalaya N.Delhi paid a special visit to NMNH on 17.10.2008. Educational staff interacted with the students in the museum galleries and discussed various aspects of protecting the environment & wildlife.
  2. A group of 11 students from Department of Museology, Aligarh Muslim University visited NMNH on 21.10.2008. Exhibit Interpretation in the museum galleries, discussion about museum programmes & activities, technical know-how about exhibit preparation was done by the museum officials.





R.M.N.H., MYSORE

Exhibition on "Wild life of India: An exhibition on "Wildlife of India" was organised in collaboration with the Government Museum, Chennai at the Centenary Exhibition Hall of the Government Museum, Chennai and inaugurated to the public on 3rd October 2008 by the Commissioner of Museums, Government Museum, Chennai, in connection with the observation of the wildlife week. The exhibition was on display in the Government Museum from 3rd to 13th October 2008 for public view.

Participation in the Dussera Exhibition 2008: Regional Museum of Natural History, Mysore hired a stall in the Dussera Exhibition 2008 and put up an Exhibition about RMNH's activities and printed a book mark with gallery timings and phone nos. for public distribution. Every day thousands of visitors visited the RMNH stall at the Exhibition.

Extended timings of the Museum: Due to Dussera the timings of the Museum has been extended for one hour more to the public. i.e. 10.00 A.M. to 6.00 P.M., from 8th to 31st October 2008.

Environment and Wildlife Film Festival: Environment and Wildlife Film Festival was organized during October 15-17, 2008. It was inaugurated at Ravindra Bhawan by Honorable Mayor, Bhopal Municipal Corporation, Shri Sunil Sood. Twenty three films were screened in the auditorium of the museum. Students of fifteen schools participated in screening of the films. This festival was organized in collaboration with Centre for Media Studies, New Delhi. WWF, MoEF, Norwegian Embassy, HSBC, Sida, Embassy of Sweden, M.P. Ecotourism Development Board (MPEDB), MPTDC, MPPCB were the other partners. Its valedictory function was organized in the auditorium of museum. Dr.(Mrs.) Gopa Pandey, CEO, MPEDB was the chief guest of the occasion. Prize winners of junior group of the painting competition awarded with prizes, trophies and certificates.

Painting Competition: A painting competition was also organized on the theme ‘Climate Change’ under ‘Environment and Wildlife Film Festival’. Students of thirteen schools participated in this competition. This competition was organized in two groups’ i.e. junior group (Class 6-8) and senior group (Class 9-12). Aman Rajput, 8th-B of Scholar’s Home Public School won first prize and Shubhi Agarwal, 8th-B of Canyon Hr. Sec. School bagged second while Krishna Raikwar, 7th, Public Royal Hr. Sec. School received third prize of junior group. Varhsa Jain, 9th of Scholar’s Home Public School won first prize and Indira Tiwari, 10th-B of St. Thomas Convent School bagged second while Rashmi Batham, 9th, Kopal Hr. Sec. School received third prize of senior group.

Advisory Meeting for “Capacity Building Programme for Teachers by Tree Census”: Reputed botanists namely Dr. Shaukat Saeed Khan, Dr. Nasreen Siddiqui, Dr. Kirti Jain and Dr. Uma Shankar Sharma along with teachers from various colleges and NGOs of Bhopal participated in this meeting. The Museum has received their guidance and materialistic support to develop the ‘field identification key’.

Jigyasa: Jigyasa is a programme revived with EPCO and M.P. Tourism Development Corporation, Bhopal. This interactive programme has been conducted twice a week.

Gandhi Jayanti celebration: An exhibition of the paintings and posters done by children of different groups from class 1 to 18 years and above in competitions held by the Museum. The exhibition was put on display for the public after the inauguration by chief guest Prof. P.Mohanty Hejmadi. Prizes to all the prize winners of painting competitions were also awarded in the ceremony by our guests, Shri R.K.Dey CCF, MoE&F and former Ambassador Shri Abasar Beuria.

Concert on peace, harmony and environment: A concert was organized on 2nd October in association with the Sarvoday International Trust of India, Orissa chapter in the Museum by Guru Mohini Mohan Pattnaik and his band of flutists. The ceremony was held in the evening and was attended by many eminent personalities.

Wildlife Week: The wildlife week began with an Exhibition of Paintings and Posters on Gandhiji’s thoughts on environment on 2nd of October. It was followed by Quiz and debate competitions for students all over the state on the 4th of October. The quiz was held for students of classes 10th 11th and 12th while debate was held for the students from 7th to 9th std. The winners were awarded on the same day with trophies and books.

Field trips:

  1. The prize winners of the Painting Competition of the junior groups from classes 1 to 6th were taken for a nature camp to Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary, the group of 20 students visited Deras dam and the adjoining places to explore the habitat of the elephant and other wild animals.
  2. A field visit to Indian Rare Earths Ltd. Chattrapur, Ganjam has been planned on the 25th of this month for the senior group prize winners of the various competitions like painting, quiz and debate.

Educational Programmes & Activities(September-2008)

International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer (16th September, 2008):

To sensitize the school children on the matters for preservation of the Ozone Layer, a Declamation Contest was organised on 16th September, 2008 for the students of classes IX & X from various schools in Delhi & NCR.

UNEP Theme for 2008: "Montreal Protocol - Global partership for global benefits"

Topic for Declamation Contest:

    "The Earth without Ozone Layer is like a house without a roof"

Each participant was allowed to speak for 3 minutes on the topic either in Hindi or English. In total 66 students from 34 schools participated in the contest. Mrs. Nupur Awasthi, Educational Consultant, TOI and Mrs. Parminder Basu Chowdhary, Sr. Instructor (Environment), National Bal Bhawan were the Judges for the contest. First, Second, Third and Five Encouragement Prizes were declared. The winners will receive the prizes on 19th November, 2008 at the Inaugural Function of NEAC-2008. In addition to the prizes the winners will also get a chance to go on a Nature Study Tour to Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan.

Special Visits:

  1. 12 visually challenged students from Venu Institute of Universal Education, Delhi visited NMNH on 5th September, 2008.
  2. CCRT, Dwarka, N. Delhi brought 61 under-privileged children to NMNH on 12th September, 2008.
  3. RASTA (NGO), Delhi brought 76 underprivileged children to NMNH on 16th September, 2008. The Educational Staff interacted with the special visiting groups in the museum galleries for exhibit interpretation and briefed them about the educational programmes and activities.

Observation of International Ozone Day:The museum has conducted a Debate Competition on 11.9.08 for B.Ed. College students and Model Making Competition on 13.9.08 for D. Ed. College student in connection with International Ozone Day 2008. The entries of Model Making Competition were exhibited in the Temporary Exhibition hall for public view and prize distribution function was also organized on 16th September. Dr. B. Venugopal, Director, NMNH, New Delhi was the Chief Guest and Dr. K.S. Rangappa, Professor, Deptt. of Chemistry, University of Mysore delivered an illustrated talk on “Importance of Ozone Layer and its depletion”.

The following activities and programmes were conducted:-

  1. Monkey Manners: An awareness programme on the theme “Monkey Manners”. This programme was organized at Govt. Middle School, Piplani. 40 students participated in the said programme.
  2. Essay Competition & Lecture-cum-demonstration An Essay Writing Competition and a Lecture-cum-demonstration would be conducted on 29th Sept. 2008. The theme of the programme would be “Ozone hole: Save Earth”.
  3. Hindi Fortnight: Various competitions are organised under the Hindi Fortnight from September 14 to 28, 2008.
  4. Jigyasa: A programme revived with EPCO and M.P. Tourism Development Corporation, Bhopal. This interactive programme has been conducted twice a week.

Painting & Poster Competition: To observe International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer on 14.9.2008, a competition was held on 21.9.2008 in which about 250 children participated under four categories on the theme “Gandhiji’s Thoughts on Environment”. An exhibition of the Entries would be displayed on Gandhi Jayanti, coinciding with Wildlife Week.

Educational Programmes & Activities(August-2008)

Orientation Workshop for Teachers:

Aworkshop for trainee teachers from DIET, R. K. Puram, Delhi was organized from 20th August to 23rd August, 2008. Forty trainee teachers from the institute participated in the workshop along with two faculty members. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. B. Venugopal, Director, NMNH followed by an interactive session with the participants by Mrs. Nupur Awasthi, Educational Consultant, TOI on the theme: "How to make young minds aware of their environment". The participants were briefed about the educational programmes and activities conducted by the museum followed by visit to the musuem galleries for exhibit interpretation and working with worksheets.

In the next session of the workshop the trainee teachers were introduced to "Interpretation of Nature through clay-modelling". The staff from the Modelling section gave a demonstration about making pug-marks, leaf impressions from plaster-of-paris and making of animal/bird models from clay. The participants got hand on experience in making animal/bird models out of clay.

The session with Art section included demonstration of making "Low cost teaching aids". The participants were divided into four groups for making low cost science models on selected themes.

On the last day of the workshop a Nature Study Tour was conducted for the trainee teachers to Aravalli Biodiversity Park, Delhi. Besides Nature Walk through the park to learn about flora and fauna of the area, the participants were also taken to the Orchidarium, Fernary, Herbal Medicinal Garden, Butterfly park and Wetlands where they got a chance to observe the rare plants and learnt a lot about relationships and interdependence of living organisms with their environment thus knowing how nature works in harmony.

Special Visits:

  1. Thiru R. Velu, Minister of State for Railways visited NMNH and went through Museum galleries on 5th August, 2008. The Director, NMNH along with Educational Staff accompanied him through the galleries for exhibit interpretation.
  2. A group of 12 students from Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management visited NMNH along with one faculty member on 21st August, 2008. They were briefed about museum galleries and various educational programmes/activities conducted by the museum.

Teacher orientation workshop: A Teacher Orientation Workshop-2008 was organised for the Higher Primary Teachers of Pandavapura Taluk, Mandya District during 18th to 20th August 2008 at the premises of Shankarananda Bharathi Vidya Samsthe, Kuntibetta, Pandavapura. 30 teachers from different schools of Pandavapura Taluk were participated in the Workshop. The teachers were exposed to both indoor and outdoor activities with lectures, power point presentations, teaching aid preparation and visit to bird sanctuary through eminent resource persons to enhance their capacity building process for teaching environmental education in the classroom. The workshop was inaugurated by the Education officer Shri Lingaraju of Mandya District. The Deputy Director Public Instructions Shri A. Somashekar, Mandya District was the chief guest for the valedictory session.

Expert Meeting: Scientist-in-Charge, RMNH, Mysore participated in the Experts Meeting ] on Garden linked Education Module organized by the Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions, Bangalore during 5th and 6th August 2008.

Photographic exhibition on Living Heritage of Temple City: On the occasion of 4th Anniversary of the Museum a “Photographic Exhibition” was put on display on 10th August, 2008. The exhibition was based on photographs of different groups of animals and various stages of their life like life cycle of butterflies, birds, spiders. Preserved and live specimen related to the photographs was also displayed. The purpose of the exhibition was to provide baseline information for student community and all sectors of people through photo documentation. This documentation is a knowledge bank for the upcoming generation.

Exposure visit to SOS: special exposure and guided visit to museum exclusively for children of SOS village studying in different schools was organized on the occasion of museum’s fourth anniversary day.

Quiz Competition:quiz competition was held for about 60 students from classes 5th-10th of SOS Children’s Village of Bhubaneswar on the occasion of the museum anniversary. 25 students who excelled in the competition were awarded with encouragement prizes.

Workshop on NHM Exhibition Techniques: A workshop on Exhibition Techniques with relevance to natural history museums was organized for the staff of all regional museums and National Museum of Natural History from 10th -12th August, 2008. During the workshop various aspects of designing, display, taxidermy process and incorporation of multimedia for making the exhibits more interactive were extensively discussed. Twenty one members participated in the workshop and exchanged their views on various subjects.

Educational Programmes & Activities(July-2008)

Interactive Learning Programme:

The schools are invited to send the students of class VI, VII & VIII in groups of not more than 35, to participate in "Interactive Learning Programme". This includes an Interactive Talk followed by Slide/CD presentation on following topics:

  • Natural Heritage of India
  • Life in our surroundings

This facility is available on prior booking.

The aim of this programme is to generate environmental and nature conservation awareness among the students.

Letters has been sent to DDEs, Directorate of Education, Delhi Govt. in 11 Zones so that the students from Government schools also get equal chance to participate in this programme.

The programme will continue in the coming months also.

Bioscience Computer Room:

This facility of Learning through Interactive CDs about Nature, Wildlife and Environment is open for the students of class VI to XII, having working knowledge of computers. They can use the Internet facility provided here. Visitor can visit the NMNH Website and can know about museum galleries, educational programmes and activities held in the museum through special CD presentations.

Summer Programme-2008(continued....):

Nature Study Tour(6th to 10th june,2008):

The participants of Summer Programme-2008, Group-I (Green Teens), were taken for a "Nature Study Tour" to "Rajaji National Park/Chilla Wildlife Sanctuary" and Dehradun-Mussoorie. The stay was arranged at Youth Hostel, Mussoorie.

On the first day of the tour, the participants were taken to Rajaji National Park/Chilla Wildlife Sanctuary in Bus/Jeep Safari. They observed the wilderness, identified the flora & fauna of the region, saw the wild animals and birds like elephants, chitals, monitor lizard, neelkanth, peafowls, jungle fowls, green bee-eater, etc. In the afternoon after lunch a visit to Kemty falls in Mussoorie refreshed the children. On the second day a visit to Dhanaulti was made. There the children got the experience of trekking in the hills to Surkanda Mata temple which is at height of 10,000 feet above sea-level. On the third day children were taken to Forest Research Institute (FRI), Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and Sahastradhara in Dehradun.

Thus participants had a rare Lifetime chance to explore Nature and its Wildlife while actually trekking and observing the environment in a National Park/Wildlife Sanctuary and in the hills. The stay in the Youth Hostel gave them the experience of self-independence, sharing with friends and exposure of a life away from family.

World Environment Day:

30th year of the Foundation of NMNH and "World Environment Day" was observed on 5th June, 2008. The Function was organised at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil was the Chief Guest at the function. Minister of State for Environment, Sh. Namo Narayan Meena and Minister of State for Forests & Wildlife, Thiru S. Reghupati were also present at the ocassion. The best student, Shefalika, of Group-I (Green Teens) was selected as "Young Environmentalist" for the year-2008 and was decorated by the Hon'ble President of India.

Ministers of state, MOEF, gave away the prizes to the First, Second and Third prize winners in "Quiz Contest" and "Declamation Contest" held during Summer Programme-2008, Group-I (Green Teens) and to prize winners of various contests held for participants of M.N.E. and P.N.E. Groups.

Valedictory Function of Summer Programme-2008:

The function was held in the third floor auditorium of NMNH on 17th June, 2008. Sh. Sharad Gaur, Regional Director, CEE, Delhi was the Chief Guest at the function. Dr. B. Venugopal, Director, NMNH and Mrs Naaz Rizvi, Scientist-B, NMNH were present at the ocassion. Encouragement Prizes were given to the prize winners of "Quiz Contest" and "Declamation Contest" held during Summer Programme-2008, Group-I (Green Teens). First, Second, Third and Encouragement Prize winners of "making & presentation of Projects" and "Photography Contest" were also awarded. Participation Certificates and token gifts were given to all the participants of Summer Programme-2008, Group-I (Green Teens). Saraswati Vandana and a patriotic song was presented by the participants of Group-I (Green Teens). Participation Certificates and Token Gifts were also given to the participants of M.N.E. & P.N.E. Groups.

Educational Programmes & Activities(May-2008)

Summer Programme-2008:

The Division of Educational Services, NMNH organized annual "Summer Programme" on ''Exploring Nature and Environment'' Group-I (Green Teens) for the students of class VIII, IX & X. The programme is being conducted from 15th May to 15th June, 2008..

The objectives of the programme are:

  1. To inculcate among students an appreciation of the Environment resources of the country, their use and management.
  2. To create opportunities for hands on experiments in the field.
  3. To understand locally available Environmental Resources, their sustainable useand conservation.
  4. To interact with leading experts in the field including core and visiting faculty.

The programme was advertised in the leading newspapers on 2nd May, 2008. More than 160 applications were recieved till 9th May, 2008, the last date of submitting applications. 40 participants were finally selected on the basis of their combined performance in a special written test and subsequent group discussion held on 10th May, 2008.

The programme is a unique mix of Lectures, Slide/CD presentations, Institutional visits, working with microscopes, presentation of Projects, Quiz Contest, Declamation Contest, Nature photography, Art out of waste, preparation of Nature Magazine and Nature Study Tour to a Wildlife Sactuary.

International Day for Biodiversity (22nd May, 2008):

ALecture on Biodiversity by Dr. Saood Husain, Lecturer, A.M.U. was arranged for the participants of Summer Programme (Group-I).

Skill Session on "Nature Photography" was conducted for the participants of Summer Programme-2008, Group-I (Green Teens). This experience will help the participants in taking photographs during visit to 'Biodiversity Park' and 'Nature Study Tour'

Special Visits:

The Group-I (Green Teens) participants of Summer Programme-2008 visited "Centre for Science and Environment" on 17th May, 2008 to "Learn Roof Top Rain Water Harvesting" and Water Conservation.

The participants visited "Aravalli Biodiversity Park, Delhi" on 23rd May, 2008 and get a chance to see Orchidarium, Fernary, Butterfly park, Medicinal plants and a talk/slide show on Birds.

Educational Programmes & Activities(April-2008)

"Earth Day"(22nd April,2008):

On the occasion of the “Earth Day”, NMNH invited school students to participate in an “On-the- Spot Essay Writing Competition” on 22nd April, ’08, under the following three groups:
Group I: Class IV & V
Group II: Class VI, V& VIII
Group III: Class IX, X, XI & XII

Participants were provided with writing paper by the NMNH. Topics were announced on the spot as the following:
Group I: “What can I do to make the Earth Clean & Green?”
Group II: “Save trees to save Environment, Save Earth to save our Life.”
Group III: “Preserve the Earth for Eternity, For Life to maintain its Identity.”

998 students from 43 Schools in Delhi and NCR region participated in the programme. This includes 10 individual entries also. The groupwise detail of participants is as following:
Group I: English entries - 177, Hindi entries - 84, Total - 261
Group II: English entries - 274, Hindi entries - 105, Total - 379
Group III: English entries - 217, Hindi entries - 141, Total - 358

Film show on Nature, Environment and Wildlife was arranged in the museum auditorium for the teachers and parents accompaning the participants.

The winners of the Essay Writing Competition were awarded with attractive prizes on ‘World Environment Day’ (5th June, ’08)
